Why the Concrete Contractor You Pick Matters in the Niagara Region
Most people hire a concrete contractor once, maybe twice, in their life. So there's no way to know going in what separates a good pour from a bad one, they look identical the day the forms come off.
A few things we pay attention to that a lot of crews rush through:
Base prep
Base prep isn't glamorous, but it's where a driveway's whole future gets decided. We excavate to depth, compact in stages, and grade so water actually drains away from the slab instead of pooling under it.
Control joints
Concrete cracks. That's not a defect, it's physics. What a decent contractor does is control where proper joint spacing so any cracking happens along a clean line instead of splitting your walkway down the middle.
Ontario winters
Ontario winters are brutal on concrete that wasn't mixed for them. We use air-entrained mix built for freeze-thaw, and honestly, we've walked off a job site before because conditions weren't right for a pour that day. Clients don't always love hearing that in the moment. They appreciate it five years later.
Finishing window
Finishing has a window of maybe 20-30 minutes depending on temperature and humidity. Miss it and you get a surface that spalls or discolours within a couple seasons. This part just comes down to reps, hours on a trowel, not a certificate on a wall.

How long does a job take?
Steps or a small walkway, a few days. A full driveway or patio, usually one to two weeks once you count excavation, forming, the pour itself, and cure time. Spring and fall jobs sometimes get pushed a day or two for weather — better that than pouring in the wrong conditions.
What finishes do you offer?
Broom, stamped, exposed aggregate, coloured, polished, and standard smooth for garages and shop floors.
Will it crack?
Some hairline cracking is normal for any concrete, full stop. Where and how much comes down to base prep and joint placement — which is most of why we spend so much time on both before a single truck arrives.

What Is a Concrete Contractor?
A concrete contractor handles the prep, pour, and finish work for concrete on residential, commercial, and industrial jobs. Where a general contractor manages a whole build, a concrete contractor's whole job is just this one material, start to finish.
Day to day, that means: clearing and grading the site, building forms, laying rebar or mesh, mixing and pouring, finishing the surface (troweled, broomed, stamped, whatever the job calls for), curing it properly, cutting control joints, and repairing or resurfacing older concrete when needed.
The projects run the gamut — driveways, walkways, patios, pool decks, garage floors, foundations, slabs, steps, curbs, retaining walls, sidewalks, commercial lots. Some contractors, us included, also do decorative work like stamped patterns or coloured finishes for people who want more than just function out of it.
Once it's poured, concrete's permanent. That's really the whole argument for hiring someone who's done it a long time in your specific climate, on your specific soil, rather than going with whoever's cheapest — the mistakes don't show up on day one, they show up in year three.
