Custom Concrete Pool Decks Since 1987
Concrete Pool Decks
Slip-resistant concrete pool decks. Serving Niagara, Grimsby, Beamsville, Vineland, Jordan, Smithville, Stoney Creek, Hamilton, Ancaster and St. Catharines since 1987.
Niagara North Contracting pours new concrete pool decks for residential and commercial properties across the Niagara Region and Hamilton area. Concrete pool decks are designed around the pool shape, the yard grade, and how the space gets used. We plan drainage, specify the right mix for Southern Ontario freeze-thaw conditions, and apply a finish that is both slip-resistant and suited to the property. Material
Concrete for Pool Decks in Southern Ontario
Pool decks take more abuse than most outdoor surfaces. Water is on them constantly during the season. People walk on them barefoot. They bake in direct sun through July and August, then sit through freeze-thaw cycles from November through March. The material has to handle all of that without shifting, cracking at random, or becoming a slip hazard when wet.
Concrete works well in this application for reasons that are specific to how it gets built. The mix is designed for the conditions, not a generic residential pour. Air entrainment helps the slab expand and contract through temperature swings without cracking through the surface. The finish is chosen to provide traction when wet, not just to look good in photographs. Drainage gets planned before forming starts, so water moves away from the pool edge and the house foundation rather than sitting on the surface or pooling against the structure.
In Grimsby, Stoney Creek, and parts of Hamilton, clay-heavy soil requires a deeper granular base than many contractors budget for. We account for that from the first site visit, because the base is what determines how the decks perform five and ten years out, not the surface finish.
Finishes
Pool Decks Finishes We Install
Every finish below gets chosen based on the pool type, the yard, and the homeowner's priorities. We walk through the options during the site visit and do not push one finish over another.
Broom-Finished Concrete
A transverse broom texture applied to the surface while the concrete is still workable. Practical, cost-effective, and reliably slip-resistant when wet. The most common choice for family pools that see heavy foot traffic across a full summer.
Exposed Aggregate
The cream layer is washed back after the pour to reveal the natural stone within the mix. The result is a textured, slightly rougher surface that provides solid grip when wet and holds up well through freeze-thaw seasons. Common on larger lots in Beamsville, Vineland, and rural properties throughout Lincoln.
Stamped Concrete Pool Decks
Patterned to resemble natural stone, slate, or large-format tile — without the individual pieces that can shift or work loose after a hard winter. The texture and pattern get pressed into the surface during the pour. An additional non-slip additive can be worked into the sealer for pools where wet-surface traction is a priority.
Coloured and Integral-Colour Concrete
Colour built into the mix or applied as a surface hardener. Cooler tones, grays, and sandy shades are the most requested for pool decks in this area because they reflect heat rather than absorbing it, which matters in July and August when the decks are in direct sun.
Brushed and Salt-Finish Concrete
A salt finish creates a fine, pitted texture across the surface by pressing rock salt into the concrete during finishing, then washing it away once the slab sets. The result is a subtle, natural-looking texture with good wet traction. Less common than exposed aggregate in this region but well suited to pools with a more minimal, contemporary surround.

New Residential Concrete Pool Decks Installation
Full-build concrete pool decks for in-ground pools at single-family homes across Grimsby, Stoney Creek, Hamilton, and St. Catharines. Designed around the pool shape, yard access, and how the family uses the space through the season.
New Commercial Pool Decks Construction
Pool surrounds for apartment complexes, motels, and recreational facilities in Hamilton and the Niagara Region, built for higher foot traffic loads and consistent seasonal wear.
Stamped Concrete Pool Decks Installation
Patterned, textured concrete decks designed to resemble natural stone or large-format tile. Non-slip additives worked in where traction is a priority.
Exposed Aggregate Pool Decks Installation
A finish technique that reveals the natural stone within the concrete mix. Provides reliable wet-surface grip and holds up through repeated freeze-thaw cycles.
Coloured and Integral-Colour Pool Decks
Colour integrated into the pour or applied as a surface hardener. Lighter and cooler tones chosen to reflect heat and keep the decks surface comfortable underfoot in summer.
Broom-Finish Pool Decks Installation
A classic transverse texture that is straightforward, durable, and slip-resistant. The most practical choice for pools with heavy seasonal use.
Salt-Finish Concrete Pool Decks
A fine pitted texture that provides natural-looking grip across the surface. Suited to pools with a cleaner or more contemporary surround design.
Pool Decks Drainage Planning and Grading
Slope and drainage built into every pool decks pour. Water directed away from the pool edge, the surrounding landscaping, and the house foundation before forming begins.
Pool Coping and Concrete Border Pours
Concrete coping poured as part of the decks pour where the design calls for a seamless transition between the pool shell edge and the surrounding slab.
Multi-Zone Pool Decks Layouts
Larger or more complex yards often call for pool decks that separate into distinct areas — a wet zone around the pool, a dry lounge area, and a covered section under a pergola or roof. We plan and form those zones as part of a single cohesive pour.
Concrete Steps and Landings to Pool Grade
Steps and landings poured as part of the pool decks to connect the decks surface to a door, existing patio, or yard grade change.
Patio-to-Pool Decks Tie-Ins
Where new pool decks meet an existing patio or concrete slab, we match the grade and elevation so the transition is clean and drains correctly.
Build logic
What Goes Into Building Concrete Pool Decks in Southern Ontario
Pool decks differ from standard patios in a few ways that affect how we build them. Drainage is more critical. Water volume around a pool — from splashing, from bathers getting out, from a backwash discharge — is higher than on a standard patio. The decks need to slope correctly toward drains or lawn edges so that water never pools against the pool shell or the house.
The surface finish determines slip risk. Decks that look clean in dry conditions can become a liability when they're wet and full of barefoot traffic. Every finish we use on a pool decks gets selected with wet-surface traction in mind, not just aesthetics.
The mix design matters more here. Pool decks sit partially shaded, partially in full sun, partially wet, and gets walked on barefoot by people going back and forth to cold water. Thermal expansion and surface temperature swings are more pronounced than on a typical backyard patio. We design the mix accordingly.
Soil conditions vary across our service area. Clay-heavy ground in Grimsby and Hamilton retains moisture differently than the sandier soils common in Vineland and Jordan. Frost heave is a real concern across all of Southern Ontario, and the base depth and compaction method gets adjusted for what's actually under the yard, not a standard spec applied everywhere.
Process
How We Build Concrete Pool Decks
-
Site Visit and Measurements
We walk the yard with you before anything is designed or quoted. Pool shape, decks width, yard grade, existing fencing, equipment pad locations, and how the space connects to the house all factor into the layout. We check soil type, drainage direction, and whether the existing grade around the pool shell is going to work with the planned decks elevation.
-
Design and Layout
Decks width, finish, coping detail, step locations, and drainage outlet positions get confirmed before we start talking price. For multi-zone layouts, we work through each area and how they connect.
-
Permits and Utility Locates
Pool decks permits depend on the municipality. Some require them, some do not, and the rules around setbacks and coverage can vary. We sort that out during planning and handle the application where one is needed. Utility locates are arranged before excavation on every job.
-
Excavation and Base
We excavate to the depth the project calls for, then place and compact granular base material in layers. For clay-heavy lots in Grimsby and Hamilton, this step gets more attention than on sandier ground. A properly compacted base is what keeps the slab level and crack-free over time.
-
Forming and Reinforcement
Forms go in along the pool edge and the outer perimeter of the decks. Steel mesh or rebar is placed to the project spec. Control joints are positioned to manage shrinkage cracks predictably rather than letting them develop wherever the slab wants to crack.
-
Pour and Finish
Concrete is placed, screeded, and finished in the technique specific to the chosen surface. Curing time is respected before the decks are opened to foot traffic. We do not rush the cure.
Service area
Where We Build Concrete Pool Decks
Grimsby
Established lots near the lake often mean tight access for equipment and mature landscaping to work around. Pool decks here tend to be designed around what's already in the yard rather than cleared and rebuilt from scratch.
Beamsville and Lincoln
Larger lots give more room for multi-zone decks layouts. Exposed aggregate is a common request on properties in this area, sitting well against the rural landscape.
Vineland and Jordan
Estate properties and larger residential lots here tend toward natural-finish concrete — exposed aggregate and salt-finish are the most requested, and the sandy soil in parts of this area requires base prep that differs from clay-heavy Grimsby ground.
Smithville
Rural lot sizes mean pool decks can be designed with more generous dimensions. Layouts here often incorporate a lounging zone separate from the immediate pool surround.
Stoney Creek
A mix of established Hamilton-area properties and newer subdivisions. Newer builds often have in-ground pools installed with the house, and the pool decks gets poured as part of the project completion. Older properties sometimes have an existing concrete decks that get removed and replaced entirely — we handle the demolition and full re-pour as a new build.
Hamilton — Ancaster, Dundas, Westdale and Surrounding Areas
Clay soil throughout much of Hamilton means base preparation is more involved than it looks on paper. We know the soil conditions across Hamilton's neighbourhoods and size the excavation and base accordingly. Century homes with mature landscaping and tight rear access require a different approach to equipment and material delivery than a new subdivision lot.
St. Catharines
Residential pool decks across the city's established and newer neighbourhoods. Lot sizes and soil conditions vary considerably across St. Catharines, and the decks design reflects what the specific property calls for.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions About Concrete Pool Decks
How wide should concrete pool decks be?
Most residential pool decks run between four and six feet wide on the sides and back of the pool, with a wider area near the steps or main entry point. The right width depends on how the space is used — whether the priority is lounging chairs, a clear walking path, or room for a dining area near the pool. We work through that during the site visit.
Do concrete pool decks need to be sealed?
Sealing is not mandatory, but it extends the life of certain finishes and can improve surface traction when a non-slip additive is included. We advise on sealing during the consultation based on the finish chosen and how exposed the decks will be to direct sun and water.
Can concrete pool decks handle the freeze-thaw winters in Southern Ontario?
Yes, when it is built correctly. Air-entrained concrete, proper base preparation, and control joints placed to manage shrinkage are the three factors that determine long-term freeze-thaw performance. Decks that crack and heave after a few winters were typically poured on an inadequate base or with a mix that was not suited to the climate.
How long before new pool decks can be used after the pour?
Concrete reaches workable strength within a few days of the pour, but a full cure takes longer. We advise on when the decks are ready for foot traffic and furniture based on the conditions at the time of the pour. Rushing the cure damages the surface finish, so we build time into the project schedule for it.
Can concrete pool decks be poured around an existing pool that is already in the ground?
Yes. Most of the pool decks work we do is around existing in-ground pools. The pool shell, coping edge, and equipment pad locations all factor into how the decks are formed and sloped.
Do you install concrete pool decks on above-ground pools?
No. Our pool decks work is for in-ground pools only.
Do you repair or resurface existing concrete pool decks?
No. Niagara North Contracting installs new concrete pool decks only. We do not repair, resurface, or reseal existing decks.
